Etihad Sends Emirati Trainees Abroad First Time

Etihad Airways just made aviation history for its Emirati workforce. The airline launched its first international summer deployment for Emirati airport trainees. This move marks a fresh milestone in Etihad's Emiratisation strategy. Announced on July 3, 2026, the program hands UAE Nationals real responsibility abroad. They are working at some of Etihad's busiest overseas stations during peak summer travel.

Who Made The Cut

Seven Emiratis form the very first cohort chosen for this deployment. Each one completed the foundation phase of Etihad's Airports and Ground Operations Programmes first. This small group marks the start of something bigger. Etihad plans to turn this into an ongoing pipeline of Emirati aviation talent. Future trainees will follow the same path into international roles.

Where The Trainees Are Headed

The seven trainees joined teams at four major international stations. These include Copenhagen, Paris, Phuket, and Kuala Lumpur. Etihad picked these cities for a clear reason. Each one handles heavy passenger traffic during the summer travel rush. That gives trainees real exposure to demanding, high-pressure airport environments. It is a tougher test than a quieter route would offer.

How The Training Program Works

The Airports and Ground Operations Programmes start with one shared foundation phase. Training happens at Zayed International Airport, Etihad's home hub. Classroom learning runs alongside hands-on operational work. Trainees rotate through several frontline roles during this stage. These include check-in, boarding, transfer services, baggage handling, and arrivals. From there, they move into airport supervisory positions. Trainees also get exposure to network operations and aircraft dispatch. This builds a fuller picture of how an airline actually runs. Only after finishing this foundation phase can trainees join the international deployment. Once there, they apply everything they learned in live airport settings.

Why Etihad Is Doing This Now

Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Etihad's Chief People, Government and Corporate Affairs Officer, explained the thinking behind it. She said Emirati talent sits at the center of the airline's long-term growth plans. Etihad launched its Emiratisation strategy last year. Since then, the airline has invested in programs pairing solid operational training with real global exposure.

Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, Chief Operations and Guest Officer, added his own perspective. He said every smooth journey for passengers starts on the ground. The Airport Programmes prepare the next generation of Emirati professionals for that job. Their goal is safe, efficient, and world-class airport operations. He also pointed out a secondary benefit. This deployment does not stand alone. Etihad says past trainees from similar programs now oversee operations in several regions. These include East Asia, Europe, the GCC, and North Africa.
